Life imitated art at the Singing In The Smokies Independence Day Festival as
Inspirations families, friends, and many lucky fans experienced part of the
Inspirations song A Wedding Invitation during the afternoon nuptials of
Inspirations bass player, Myron Cook and Jennifer Spencer. Myron and Jennifer had chosen
July 3, 2004, so that most of the current and former Inspirations gathered for the
evenings Reunion program- could participate in the ceremonies.
Archie Watkins sister, Joann, had transformed the familiar
rustic stage at Inspiration Park into a white chapel complete with stained glass windows.
Baskets of colorful summer flowers competed with the surrounding majesty of the Smokies to
complete the natural decorations. The wedding group had held a full rehearsal the previous
day, and everything appeared to be on track for a beautiful and memorable outdoor wedding.
And memorable, it
was!
Pianist John Locust, of the Carolina Crossmen, began the pre-wedding music;
Jennifers mother, Karen Spencer, Myrons mother, Ora Blanche Cook and
Grand-mother Nancy Shuler, were seated by former Inspirations/Groomsmen Chris Smith, Ron
Hutchins and Myrons younger brother Michael Cook. Myron and his best man, dad Martin
Cook, along with officiating minister, Rev. Matt Dibler, stepped through the white drapes;
and then the Lord decided to announce His presence with a gentle sprinkle. Then He decided
to increase His presence. The winds picked up, the heavens opened wider, and guests
scrambled for the cover of the shelter as the sprinkles became a downpour.
Thankfully, the showers of blessing ended as fast as they had begun, and the wedding
quickly resumed. Another former Inspiration, Marlin Shubert, joined Michael, Chris and Ron
as they escorted the bridesmaids to the stage. Bridesmaids were Kayla Stephens, Lori
Spencer, Kelly Spencer and Myrons sister, Marcia Cook; and the Maid of Honor was
Heather May.
Flower girls Janna Spencer, Emily Spencer and Reagan Beck (Archies grand-daughter)
then charmed the crowd as they dropped lilac flower petals on the aisle runner. Ring
bearers, D J and Luke Spencer did what little boys do at weddings. Their naturally bright
red hair and then their hasty trip up the aisle brought smiles to everyone; and finally
the familiar strains of The Wedding March began.
Jennifers
father, Lowell Spencer, escorted the bride, carrying a bouquet of white Calla lilies and
dressed in a white seed-pearl beaded empire-bodice wedding gown, to the stage.
Myron and Jennifer exchanged traditional vows; Rev. Matt pronounced them husband and wife,
and as the groom kissed his new bride, a loud whistle was heard from behind the white
curtains. Although no one has admitted to the disruption, rumor has it that the ole
bear-hunter, Jack Laws may have been the culprit. Jacks only comment was
that its a mountain thang . On a more spiritual note,
during the ceremony, Melton Campbell sang Household of Faith; the
brides mother, Karen, sang Parents Prayer, and all the
Inspirations sang A Wedding Invitation.
After the wedding, guests and fans were treated to a delicious reception beautifully
decorated in Jennifers favorite colors of lilac, yellow and white.
Myron was given the rest of the week off
from his duties with the Inspirations, and shortly after the ceremony the newlyweds left
for their honeymoon trip to cabins in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and later, West Virginia.
