Singing River Electric lineman killed during outage

By ROYCE ARMSTRONG   The Mississippi Press

LUCEDALE -- Singing River Electric journeyman lineman Nathan Pierce, 24, of Lucedale was accidentally electrocuted Thursday night while responding to a power outage. Pierce was part of a crew working in the White's Chapel Church community in southeast Greene County about 8:30 p.m. when the accident occurred.

The power outage occurred during severe thunderstorms in the area. Pierce was taken to George County Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. according to Greene County Coroner Clyde Gilley.

"The entire organization is deeply saddened by the loss of our co-worker and friend," said Singing River Electric Manager of communication Lorri Freeman. "Nathan was deeply reverent and real family oriented.

"Our thoughts and prayers extend to the family at this time," she added.

Pierce, a graduate of George County High School, had been an employee of Singing River since 1999.

"He was a good Christian man," said Sam Merrit, a neighbor who had grown up with Pierce. "Everybody liked Nathan Pierce. He loved the outdoors and he loved to fish."

"You couldn't find a better person," said Chris Dixon, a close friend. "I have known Nathan all of my life. You could not have a better friend. He would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. He loved to hunt and fish and he was very excited about being a new father."

Pierce's pastor also reacted to the news.

"This has been just devastating news," said Rev. Jeff Bass, pastor of the Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, where Pierce was a member. "I have been on the phone with church members all morning and no one can believe this. He was so good hearted and very likable.

"He was very involved in the church and church activities," Bass said. "The entire family is. He was the song director for the church. Both his father, Perry, and his grandfather, Mack, are deacons. His older brother, Mack, is a pastor at a church in Mendenhall."

Pierce was known by many who attend Southern gospel events in the area, Bass said.

"He had a great interest in gospel music. His father-in-law, Mike Holcomb, is the bass singer for the Southern gospel group, the Inspirations, out of North Carolina."

Bass said that funeral services are pending until the Red Cross can arrange to have his brother Josh returned home. Josh is serving with Company B of the Army National Guard's 150th Combat Engineer Battalion in Iraq.

Pierce leaves behind his wife and a 4-week old daughter.

A memorial fund has been established for the family at the First National Bank in Lucedale. The account is under the name "Nicole and Aubrey Pierce, wife and daughter of Nathan Pierce" and will be open for 30 days.
