Trey, Tammy & Troy Burns

Troy is a Sunday School teacher for college age kids and a former Little League baseball coach. Troy and Tammy are small business owners in Swain and Jackson Counties, operating the Papas Pizza store and Video Den in Bryson City, and the "Suds Your Duds Laundromat", the Treyburn Apartment Complex, and Laurel Oaks Apartments in Cullowhee, NC, near the campus of Western Carolina University.
Although each of the original Inspirations (Archie, Ron, Jack, Troy and Martin) came from extremely modest beginnings, each of us will quickly tell you that we are very thankful for our family backgrounds; and we thank God daily for our roots here in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. The Inspirations probably owe most of our success over the years to the simple family lives we were born into.

Troy literally was born and raised (for you city folk, that's "country talk" for 'reared') in a log cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains of Swain County. His great grandfather, Fide Hyde, was a brother to Ben Hyde, the grandfather of a former State Senator from Buncombe County, the Honorable Herbert Hyde; so there is a background of politics in his family.

Troy began singing with the Inspirations at age 13; and during his 27 years with the group, he recorded over 50 albums. He graduated from Swain County High School; and after leaving the group, he decided to further his education and attended Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University.

Troy is a life-long resident of Bryson City where he currently serves on the Swain County Board of Education. He also serves as Co-chairman of Job Ready, serving Macon, Jackson, and Swain Counties.

In 2002, Troy ran for his party's nomination for the North Carolina House of Representatives from our State House district, 119.  The primary was held Tuesday, September 10, 2002, and Troy garnered a healthy 41% of the vote. Not bad for a political newcomer!

Troy Burns's father passes away
(Original story: November 9, 2002)

Troy's Father, Richard W. Burns, 72, formerly of Bryson City, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 9, 2002, in Largo, Fla. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Dexter and Dessie Hurley Burns.

He was a retired employee with 30 years of service in the maintenance department of the Department of Transportation, and he was blessed to spend 13 years in retirement. Richard was a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church and was a bluegrass music lover. He was also an excellent mandolin player.

Richard was preceded in death by a son, Troy's younger brother, C.D. Burns. Long time Inspirations' friends may remember that C. D. was in a tragic light airplane accident which ocurred while he was a passenger in a new plane attempting to land at the then Bryson City air strip, Sossamon field. He is survived by Troy and his wife, Tammy, of Bryson City; two grandchildren, Chris Burns of Flafstaff, Ariz., and Trey Burns of Knoxville, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Drew and Shannon; four sisters, Hazel Willis of Franklin, Blanche Upton of Maiden, Mary Longwith of Bryson City and Barbara Clark of Ringgold, Ga.

The family received friends from noon to 2 p.m., Thursday, November 14, at Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City. Visitation was followed by sevices at the funeral home with the Rev. Eddie Deitz officiating. Many of the original Inspirations were on hand to sing.

Burial followed in Swain Memorial Park.
